Overview A unique curriculum introduces freshmen to the environmental concepts that contribute to their understanding of the restoration of the Everglades.
Honors Research I/ II (Overview of the Everglades) provides them with an in-depth study of the Kissimmee-Okeechobee-Everglades (KOE) watershed. Modules include geography, geology, water, ecology, economics, history and CERP. The students’ first science class is Honors Biology and all students are required to take an End of Course exam (EOC) as deemed by the Florida legislature. In addition to the required curriculum, students will learn the scientific method through hands-on labs. Students complete their physical education and health requirements for graduation in HOPE (Health Options Physical Education). They learn how to properly conduct themselves around water, take a swimming assessment test and complete small craft rescues in canoes. They may earn four Red Cross certifications: CPR, First Aid, Swimming Safety and Small Craft Safety. In Honors English, students complete the required state curriculum as well as additional magnet requirements: a college-level research paper using the MLA style, ancillary readings based on South Florida and the Everglades and a summer project. Because students at South Plantation take seven classes a day, freshmen will also take a math class (Algebra 1, Honors Algebra 1, Geometry, Geometry Honors or Honors Algebra II) and two electives. Curriculum-based field trips are a vital part of the magnet curriculum. The freshmen travel to various locations throughout Florida to reinforce what they are learning in the classroom. |
"My favorite magnet class was Research I/II because I learned about an area of the world that I can relate to and have the chance to experience. The hands-on activities allowed me to apply the concepts I learn to real-life situations". -Faren Dalipram Plantation "I really enjoyed my Water Safety class because you not only get to have physical education, but you get certified in CPR and First Aid as well!"
