More than 150 freshmen new to the Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration Magnet Program at South Plantation had their first taste of high school life, Aug. 11, at Camp Everglades 2011. The Everglades Foundation in Miami, a partner with the magnet, created a video about the camp for its membership.
During the orientation program, the students met their classmates who came from 28 different middle and private schools throughout Broward County. Teachers were on hand to prepare the newcomers for the academic rigors of high school. Coaches, cheerleaders and band members encouraged the freshmen to become involved in extracurricular activities.
Students were oriented with school procedures and the actual layout of the building through a scavenger hunt. After lunch, the freshmen conducted their first magnet water testing labs analyzing the water in the nearby canal. Later, they participated in team-building activities using the low ropes program. At the end of the day, they set academic goals for their first year of high school. Parents joined the camp at 6:30 p.m. for a dessert reception to meet the teachers and learn more about the magnet.
Twenty-four upperclassmen were counselors who worked with the freshmen during the camp under the guidance of teacher Matt Zealy, the camp director.
